Why I loved being pregnant in Glasgow!

Why I loved being pregnant in Glasgow? There are so many great places to go!

We hadn’t long moved to the Shawlands, and I really wanted to get my bearings before I gave birth and our baby arrived. I also felt this real need to stay active when I was pregnant (a great idea by the way!), so I set myself the challenge of walking everywhere I could.

Now I will admit that one time I took this to the extreme, walking from Shawlands to Clarkston whilst 38 weeks pregnant. Not my best idea! By the time I reached the café I was a sweaty mess, and the look of concern on the faces of my new friends (also in their third trimester) told me that it was probably best to catch a train home.

If you’re pregnant and looking for some places to explore on foot before your baby makes an appearance, here are my top recommendations.

  • Shawlands, Kilmarnock Rd - lots of cute little gift shops that will be tricky to navigate once you’re travelling with a pram!

  • Rouken Glen - if you live in the Southside of Glasgow, I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll spend a hefty chunk of your maternity leave in Rouken Glen park! Take this chance to visit the Boat House for a lazy brunch and to watch the world go by.

  • The Wee Retreat, Mount Florida - take a wander over and check out what mindfulness and yoga classes are on. It’s a blissful space and will really help you out with your Hypnobirthing practise.

  • Maxwell Park - this is my favourite place to take a stroll. It’s totally flat, so perfect when you’re starting to waddle. The beautiful houses and leafy walk ways are the perfect spot for a moment of calm.

  • Queens Park - take a stroll down Pollokshaws Road to visit some of the gorgeous independent shops, grab a drink from Grain & Grind, and then take a walk around the park. It’s a bit hillier here, so make sure you don’t have too far to go back.

A top tip I always suggest to my clients is to write a list of lovely things to do and places to visit close to home, so that when you come to the end of your pregnancy, you’ve got a lovely list of things to keep you focussed, positive and ready to meet your baby!
